The Montgomerys
Unnatural Selection
Peter Montogmery, longtime helmsman of the delightful Boston band The
Irresponsibles, has put together a new unit that bears both his name and
his signature sound, which falls neatly between XTC and Adrian Belew,
the latter of whom has been a mentor of sorts. Unnatural Selection
retains Mr. Montgomery's natural gifts of playful histrionic and
intricate melody, while managing to be even more accessible than The
Irresponsibles. Songs like "All Zen Buddhistry" and "Delicate
Delinquent" could be XTC singles that never were, "Meghan" is
benevolently ominous if that's possible, "Pincha Bag" and, appropriately
enough, "Painless Waltz" are nice little waltzes, while both "Big Time"
and "Gut Wrenchin" display a rare tender fragility. The pop music world
needs more people like Peter Montgomery, who have loads of songwriting
talent and are not ashamed to be silly.
